Mutual Help and Service Center
for Seniors in Zhong Guan Cun Area (Subdivision on Old-Age Problems of the Beijing Society
of Sociology)
This Center, initiated and founded by a group
of seniors led by Li Pei and Gui Huijun, has been in operation for
fourteen years. It is an
organization of older intellectuals for mutual help among themselves, and forms a
community where the members independently select and arrange their way of life in the old
age. These people generally do not have to worry about their livelihood, but the Center
provides them with some necessary services such as: information for medical emergencies,
sources for domestic helps, organizing mutual care among the aged, seminars and
consultation on medicine and health care, providing conveniences such as access to
voluntary medical services and fitting of eyeglasses, ...; The old people here will not be
lonesome, because the Center continually organizes activities to their interest: seminars
on various branches of knowledge, classes on handicrafts, music appreciation, visits to
exhibitions, exchanges with other groups of the aged,... . These seniors have demonstrated
that they are not merely recipients, but more so providers of communal services. They are
not a burden to society, but rather a contributor to community resources. |
